José Matías and Wilber Eduardo, riding in the pickup, heading toward San Ildefonso, thirteen kilometers north of la Carretera Panamericana, in the eastern sector of the Department of San Vicente, leaving behind Graciela Menéndez’s story of the talisman, noted down forever in their brains, and the town of Lajas y Canoas, the shimmering mirage of Lajas y Canoas disappearing behind them now in the rearview mirror, and leaving behind their immeasurably popular Anastasio Aquino, but no, not yet, maybe a last glass of aguardiente, a guaro in the company of a king, one for the road, so to speak, and the two of them back at a table drinking Tic tac with the King of the Nonualcos, the Flores brothers, in a parallel world for another couple of minutes, just for a quick drink in the burning sunlight, what joy and relaxation! at a table with Anastasio Mártir Aquino, Rey de los Nonualcos, José Matías and Wilber Eduardo, together, on the train that wasn’t a train with a locomotive but a train of thought, a train also carrying Anastasio Mártir Aquino, a distraction for the Flores brothers, and José Matías, a definitive gesture, raising his glass, saying, and this, our King, is a toast in your honor before we head back to our journey for the talisman — a long story we won’t bore you with — a tribute to you, a thank-you-very-much for keeping us company, more than a distraction, an honor, and a real history lesson for us, while riding in the cab of our pickup truck, a lot of worrying on the road, you know how we are, my King, and Wilber Eduardo, raising his glass, saying to himself, I can handle one more, but no more than that or I’ll pass out where I’m sitting and get a third-degree burn from this brutal sun, he was practically out of sorts, it must’ve been the heat, and in the other world, the riding-in-the-truck world, he wanted to get the talisman and finish the business they had with what they’d seen that scared the living daylights out of them, whereas his brother, José Matías, standing with a glass in his hand, loosening up with each guaro, a Tic tac, enjoying the heat of the sun and the company of a king, José Matías didn’t seem to care how they passed the time while riding in the pickup, it was either remembering Graciela Menéndez’s story or a visit with the King, so time passed quickly, but Wilber Eduardo the impatient one, and tired, too, enough of this daydreaming, I just want to get to San Ildefonso, find Graciela Menéndez’s talisman, dig it up, and bury the past.

Anastasio Aquino, Rey de los Nonualcos, proud as a king, without showing it, but a friendly smile, a fitting salutation satisfied the leader in him, and a cool, refreshing glass of aguardiente, a Tic tac fortifying him against the unmerciful sun beating down from a pitiless white sky, a sort of dream to
